Between 1949 and 1990, as a member of the Indian Foreign Service, Mr. Rasgotra filled, with high distinction, several important posts abroad and in the Ministry of External Affairs.  From 1958 to 1962 he was India’s Representative on the United Nations’ Trusteeship Council, the Fourth Committee and the De-colonization Committee of the UN General Assembly. Later, he was Dy. Chief of Mission in Washington D.C, Ambassador of India in Morocco, Tunisia, Nepal, Holland and France and twice he was India’s High Commissioner in London.  Mr. Rasgotra was Foreign Secretary of India from 1982 to 1985 under Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.  In those 3 years he conducted important negotiations with Islamabad, WashingtonD.C, Moscow and Beijing.  SAARC was founded in his time as Foreign Secretary.   Mr. Rasgotra was member of the United Nations Disarmament Advisory Board from 1983 to 1990. He was member of the National Security Advisory Board in 2000 and 2001 and was Chairman of the Board from 2005 to 2007. He has written numerous articles and delivered countless lectures on international relations in India and abroad.  After retirement he was Visiting Professor at JNU and Regents Professor at the University of California at Los Angeles.
